BTC4SG is here to help non-profit organizations, charities, and advocates working in social services harness Bitcoin for increased social good around the world. The practical goals of BTC4SG are to demystify Bitcoin and provide accessible information on how Bitcoin can be used by organizations, service providers, and advocates as a tool for empowerment and support as well as for organizational development and growth.
In addition to providing information about what Bitcoin is and how it works, this site explores practical applications of Bitcoin considered from the perspective of different issues/populations and the related work of social service organizations, service providers, and advocates. While these "issues" are listed separately on this site we recognize that they are by no means mutually exclusive; our lived realities and the challenges we face are intersectional in nature. The approach we take via the BTC4SG site is intended to provide a first gateway for grasping the relevance and practical applications of Bitcoin. You will find that several core themes run through all of these issues and applications: financial inclusion, resistance from censorship and exclusion, and civil/human rights.
In addition to the practical goals of BTC4SG, an additional overarching goal is to help individuals dedicated to social good embark on an educational journey regarding the broader social, economic and political benefits of Bitcoin adoption and use globally. This is a journey further "upstream", exploring how many of our most significant social challenges are rooted in our broken money and financial systems and how Bitcoin provides alternate structures with better incentives and greater fairness.
That's me! Hi, and welcome to BTC4SG. I created this site because there is a need for resources about Bitcoin tailored specifically for individuals working in social service organizations and for advocates. If that's you, I want to thank you for taking some time to visit.
If you're just beginning to learn about Bitcoin you may find it a bit puzzling that some of us say there is a deep connection between this thing "Bitcoin" and the goals of social impact organizations. I get it. Most media outlets only ever talk about Bitcoin as some sort of volatile and risky investment and there are also some crypto influencers who don't exactly paint a picture of Bitcoin being a tool for social good. I want to ask you though to please suspend any pre-conceived ideas you may have and to go through information you find on this site with a mind open to the possibility that there may be more to this thing.
After more than 20 years working in not-for-profit and multilateral organizations focused on community development and health, I have come to believe that Bitcoin provides one of the greatest opportunities to make meaningful progress on some of the world's most pressing challenges. I've shared my learning journey about Bitcoin, and I hope some of it resonates with you. The values and commitments that have guided me for the past twenty-plus years working in community development and global health are the same values and commitments that guide me in advancing Bitcoin education and adoption.
BTC4SG is a work in progress and will evolves over time with further updates (eg, case studies). If you have questions or suggestions, please reach out to me!
