Go Upstream

Addressing Root Causes

In addition to helping not-for-profit organizations, charities and advocates appreciate how Bitcoin can be used as a practical tool to advance their mission, another goal of BTC4SG is to help understand the broader social, economic, and political benefits of Bitcoin adoption and use around the world. This is the big picture. It is a journey further "upstream" to explore how many of our most significant social challenges are actually rooted in our broken money and financial systems. It involves asking and finding the answers to questions like:

  • What is money actually?
  • What makes "good" money versus broken money?
  • What is inflation and what causes it?
  • If technological advancement makes things easier to produce and access, then why do things keep getting more expensive?

The answers to these questions reveal that the money we have become accustomed to using over the past century -- our government and central bank issued fiat currencies -- are fundamentally broken. They produce and perpetuate perverse incentives and they result in growing social and economic inequities around the world.

This journey upstream is important in order to understand why and how Bitcoin is a promising alternative, one which is gradually producing systems and structures with better incentives, greater fairness and a more inclusive global worldview.
